A 2-year-old boy believed to be a victim of shaken baby syndrome is fighting to regain his brain functions.
Aiden Wener’s mother, Rhiannon Barnett reportedly said doctors removed part of her son’s skull to relieve swelling of his brain. His condition has been upgraded from critical and he’s been taken out of the intensive care unit and is now on the therapy floor, Barnett told the Cleveland television station.
The child has reportedly been at Akron Children’s Hospital for about two weeks for injuries to his head, upper torso and back. Police said he was injured by Barnett’s then boyfriend, Kurtis Mathes, 23.
Police and paramedics responded to an emergency call in the 500 block of Johnston Court at about 7 p.m. Jan. 30 and found the child unresponsive.
Mathes, who was arrested by detectives at the scene, told authorities the child fell down the steps, WEWS reported. Barnett was at work at the time of the alleged assault.
